92.2% of students wanted to continue the Loose Change programme the following year
Measured through fitness testing throughout the year - almost half of our Loose Change students physically improved in their cardiovascular health.
1 group of Loose Change students have attained 100% NCEA pass rate
Another group of Loose Change students, made rep teams in basketball, rugby leage and rugby this year - the year before they had not been able to achieve this.
Other feedback from students that surprised us, was the fact many made new friends and built strong relationships with their peers. This was most helpful for students who had just moved into their new kura and township.
"Kouma has formed a high trust relationship with our akonga. He has been turned up and delivered a high-level programme that even our reluctant to move akonga will involve themselves in.
- Teacher Feedback
“It has supported positive
mindsets and discipline. We are very happy to be involved in this programme and look forward to it progressing.”
- Teacher Feedback
"Parents have commented on the enthusiasm of their rangatahi in the sessions, e.g., 'I cannot believe my son is doing that, he is normally a couch
potato."
- Teacher Feedback
"The biggest transformation is seeing the non-active akonga participate to some degree in the high-level sessions. All of the akonga in Loose Change
entered teams into our local 3v3 basketball competition
and one of the teams won it!
- Teacher Feedback
“As a year 13 in school, I was glad to have the Loose Change programme as part of my last school year because it has helped with my health and fitness. I think being comfortable with Matua Kouma and Koka Sam helped me have more fun and love it even more.”
- Year 13 student from Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Waiū o Ngāti Porou
"I enjoyed Loose Change because I was a pretty
chubby guy, but Matua Kouma taught me how to have a strong mindset and to keep pushing through, even if it gets hard. All I wanted to do
was lose weight, and now thanks to Matua I have achieved my goal."
- Year 12 Student from Tolaga Bay Area School
“Matua Kouma gives the students a realistic view of how it is, clearer understanding and improvement of mindset. The
community here in terms of the teaching staff think Matua Kouma is a great asset to our kids.”
- Teacher Feedback
“The boys do go home and talk with their whānau,
and they are never absent on Loose Change day!"
- Teacher Feedback
“The most impactful part of Loose Change is the opportunity for our students to do activities
with a specialist and enthusiastic coach. Our students are really engaged and enjoying having this block of activity.”
- Teacher Feedback
“The biggest thing our tauira have gotten out of it is
positivity! Focus! We've almost attained 100% pass
rate for NCEA L1, 2, and 3."

“...the last two years have not been great for him, he’s had the wrong attitude and has been going down the wrong path, he’s only just holding on at school and this year he has already been asked not to attend a couple of school trips because of his attitude etc. He’s come back full of positive kōrero & nothing but praise for you. Today he was pretty excited to be going to school cause usually it’s a struggle to get him to go. Words will never be enough to express our heartfelt thanks to you and hopefully this is the start of a positive change in our son..."
