Our key kaupapa is the Loose Change School Programme. This initiative is dedicated to building huora and resilience in our rangatahi. Designed for intermediate and secondary school students across the Te Tairāwhiti region, it uses sport and fitness as a powerful vehicle to foster self-discipline, strengthen self-confidence, and promote the importance of both physical and mental wellbeing.
We deliver the programme directly into participating schools on a weekly or fortnightly basis, ensuring consistent engagement and strong relationships with tauira, kura, and communities. Through this approach, we aim to equip rangatahi with practical tools, positive habits, and supportive connections that help them navigate a healthy, positive, and successful future.
This school programme has 5 key focus areas:
Fitness testing at TKKM O Kawakawa Mai Tawhiti, Hicks Bay
We promote the importance of fitness, sport, healthy eating, quality sleep, recovery, and long-term health. These foundations help students develop strong habits that support physical vitality and overall longevity.
In class session at Tolaga Bay Area School, Tolaga Bay
We explore the impact of substance use, while emphasising the value of open communication and self-expression. Students learn to manage their relationship with social media and digital devices, engage in therapeutic activities and exercises, and understand the benefits of consistent morning and evening routines. Inspiring guest speakers further support these learning experiences.
Finishing up a Loose Change School session at TKKM o Te Waiū o Ngāti Porou, Ruatoria
Through the development of essential life skills, students learn coping strategies, emotional regulation, and team-building techniques. Practical willpower exercises and tailored advice help them navigate challenges and build resilience in the face of adversity.
School Prize Giving at Te Waha O Rerekohu Area School, Te Araroa
Students engage in physical fitness testing and track their progression over time. Individual mentoring supports them in setting and achieving personal goals, while a strong network of support and advocacy helps them grow with confidence and purpose.
Loose Change Students from Te Kura O Manutuke in Kapahaka
Loose Change fosters strong peer connections, building trust and creating a safe, inclusive space where every student feels a sense of belonging. Our head coach actively collaborates with aligned kaupapa across the wider community, unlocking further opportunities for student growth and engagement.
In January, during the school holiday period, we deliver a targeted holiday programme for rangatahi aged 13–18. This initiative is a condensed extension of the Loose Change School Programme, intentionally designed to carry through its core outcomes in a more relaxed, engaging, and accessible format.
The programme is grounded in the creation of a safe and supportive environment where rangatahi experience a strong sense of belonging, develop positive peer connections, and build meaningful, lasting memories. Through structured yet enjoyable activities, we promote active participation, wellbeing, and positive mindset development. A key focus is supporting rangatahi to remain engaged, active, and connected to positive influences during the school break, reducing exposure to risk and negative environments while school is not in session.
A pilot programme currently in development focused on establishing a men’s and fathers’ group that supports men’s mental health and overall wellbeing. The programme uses sport and physical activity as a positive outlet, helping men build resilience, manage stress, and improve both physical and mental health through regular exercise.
Alongside the physical component, the group provides a safe and supportive environment where men can connect, share experiences, and speak openly about challenges. It aims to reduce isolation, strengthen social connection, and build a network of like-minded men committed to personal growth and wellbeing.
